Understanding family trauma requires moving beyond symptom management to address the nervous system, attachment, and the relational environments that shape healing. In this focused three-day training, you will explore how toxic stress, ACEs, and intergenerational trauma influence behavior and emotional regulation, and how to intervene at the level of family systems rather than isolated symptoms. Led by Dr. Robert Rhoton, PsyD, LPC, F.A.A.E.T.S., this course integrates trauma neuroscience with a NeuroAffective Coherence and salutogenic framework, equipping clinicians with practical, relationally grounded tools to build safety, foster co-regulation, strengthen family resilience, and promote sustainable change beyond pathology-focused care.

*Scroll down for more information about CE hours and certificate of completion.

Training Takeaways

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain family trauma and toxic stress as systemic, neurobiological processes, including how chronic relational threat reshapes autonomic regulation, attachment patterns, and long-term stress physiology within family systems.

  • Differentiate individual trauma responses from family-system dynamics (e.g., blame cycles, enabling patterns, intergenerational scripts), and accurately assess how each presents clinically within caregivers, children, and the relational field.

  • Identify trauma-driven survival adaptations in families (e.g., control, shutdown, aggression, parentification, compliance) and reframe “problem behaviors” as biologically adaptive nervous system responses rather than character pathology.

  • Apply safety-first, stabilization, and co-regulation principles in family-based treatment, prioritizing caregiver regulation and relational safety as prerequisites for child self-regulation and skill development.

  • Integrate NeuroAffective Coherence and a salutogenic model of care to strengthen Sense of Coherence and Generalized Resistance Resources in families, shifting clinical focus from symptom control to health generation and resilience.

  • Intervene in intergenerational trauma patterns by engaging caregivers as primary agents of change, disrupting blame-based narratives, and building coherent, strengths-based family identities beyond trauma-defined roles.

Great course

I am an experience trauma therapist yet I still find there's a lot to learn here because the trainer made it more understandable in a layman terms.
