Course Description

Continuing Education Hours: 5.5

The foundation of cultural competence relies on a clinician’s awareness about themselves and the client as “cultural beings”, engaging in a therapeutic alliance from their lived experiences within intersecting social systems. The participant will learn how to broach discussions and exploration of culture with clients to develop a multicultural case conceptualization beyond the perceived “cultural differences”. The learner will learn how practice in a culturally competent way as well as know the best practices and how to address common challenges.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to explain the domains of cultural competence.

  • Participants will learn how cultural competence is ethically competent practice.

  • Participants will learn the research on cultural competence and treatment outcomes.

  • Participants will be able to discuss the intersectionality of cultural identities and power and privilege within the therapeutic alliance.

  • Participants will learn how to broach discussions and exploration of cultural factors with clients.

  • Participants will be able to integrate cultural factors into case conceptualization.

Course Instructor

Cheryl Warner

PhD, Licensed Psychologist

Cheryl Warner, PhD is a licensed psychologist with nearly 20 years of teaching and training in counselor preparation. Her scholarship and teaching focus on development of cultural competence, clinical supervision, and professional development. She has clinical experiences in community mental health, university counseling center, private practice, and military settings. Dr. Warner is a clinical associate professor in Counseling and Counseling Psychology at Arizona State University. She received a B.S in Commerce from DePaul University and MEd in Community Counseling and PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia.

You will have a 14 day window in which to make a request for a refund, providing you have not completed any of the modules in a given course.
